Heat and Light is the big guys versus the little guys. Heat and Light, like Needful Things, ends like it begins, the salesman and CEO plotting their next target: the Utica Shale, Satan setting his next shop. The pullout winds down the tension, the workers leave, the residents go back to normal, for the most part. Big energy pulls out because world markets and over-drilling make the Bakerton fracking unprofitable. Spoiler: there’s no showdown in Heat and Light. Predictably, good wins, at least for that day, and Satan is banished. He ends with a showdown scene of good versus evil for the sake of the town, which seems like the whole world. King’s novel has more plot than story, more black & white than gray, more shockingly obvious than subtle. Like Jaws or Beowulf’s Grendel, it’s the outside monster plaguing the little town. Big energy’s outside evil destroys morality and threatens physical health in one instance after another.
